Drying and Pre-Crystallization in Polyester Production

In polyester production, drying and pre-crystallization are crucial steps to treat polyester chips. The main goals are to remove moisture, improve crystallinity, and prevent issues like filament breakage or bubbles during spinning.

Key Functions

  1. Moisture Removal:
Reduces chips’ moisture content to below 0.02%, preventing moisture vaporization during spinning and reducing the risk of melt rupture and rough fibers.

  2. Improving Crystallinity:
Heating the chips evenly helps to crystallize them, avoiding clumping and ensuring smoother spinning.

Important Process Parameters

  1. Pre-Crystallization Temperature:
Typically 120°C to 140°C. If too low, crystallization will be incomplete; if too high, it can cause yellowing and clumping.

  2. Drying Temperature:
160°C to 180°C, depending on chip type, ensuring moisture is fully evaporated.

  3. Drying Time:
Adjusted based on moisture content. If the moisture is high, the drying time should be 2 to 6 hours.

  4. Air Speed and Volume:
Hot air drying with airspeed controlled at 0.5 to 1.0 m/s for even heat distribution.

Factors That Affect the Process

  • Chip Type:
Wet chips need pre-drying. Chips with low crystallinity may require higher pre-crystallization temperatures.

  • Humidity:
Keep workshop humidity below 60% to prevent moisture absorption after drying.

  • Equipment Maintenance:
Regular cleaning of filters and heaters ensures even drying and prevents blockages.

Key Considerations for Drying and Pre-Crystallization

These considerations focus on raw material control, equipment operation, process stability, and safety:

1. Raw Material Control

  • Ensure chips are free of yellowing or clumping before drying. Wet chips (moisture > 0.2%) should undergo pre-drying.

  • Do not mix different batches of chips, as this may affect the final product quality.

2. Equipment Operation

  • Clean heating filters and air channels before use to avoid clogging and ensure efficient heat transfer.

  • Regularly check seals to prevent hot air leaks that cause temperature fluctuations. The cooling system must work properly to ensure chips are thoroughly cooled.

3. Process Control

  • Gradually increase the temperature by 5–10°C per hour to avoid cracking.

  • Don’t shorten drying time; even if chips seem dry on the surface, make sure the internal moisture is entirely removed.

4. Safety and Maintenance

  • Wear protective gear when handling high-temperature equipment to avoid burns.

  • Keep fire extinguishers nearby and avoid storing flammable materials around equipment.

Conclusion

Drying and pre-crystallization are essential in polyester production. If skipped or done improperly, it can affect the quality of the final product during the spinning process.
